Order! Order in the Committee!

As part of the program, NBCU IMLP's are required to participate in one of a few committees on top of their rotation.

Some of the committees are more popular than others and are the hardest to get.

There are committees for a variety of areas within NBCU.

For example, yours truly is in charge of the West Coast Alumni Committee.

What does this entail you ask? Well I get to send out emails and invitations to events and meets between alumni and new IMLP's.

What's really cool is that most of the alumni who are off program within NBCU usually like to stay in contact with new IMLP's and some are even ALs (assignment leaders). So these "outings" are great for networking and opening doors for possible next rotations and even off program positions.

And by outings,  I mean happy hours, or something as cheesy as bowling night (and I'm terrible at bowling!).

There are a few others that stand out amongst the committees, such as the recruitment committee (speaks for itself), orientation committee, events committee, green initiative committee, etc.  We choose our top choices, but its pretty much selected at random (I chose recruitment and orientation).

Introducing... Our Newest Blogger (He's from NBC)

nbc_studio1

A little background about me... I'm Matt, a soon-tobe- first rotationer with  the IMLP program with NBC Universal in July.

I first heard of the IMLP Program when GE came to visit Syracuse University (where I got my degree in Information Management and Technology) for a Career Fair.  At first,I didn't realize that NBC Universal was even a part of the IMLP Program until I met a recruiter for my first interview.

Following the first interview, came a phone call about a 2nd interview that would be held over the phone, and if NBC liked what they heard, I would be eligable for  final round of interviews.

Shortly thereafter, I was flown out to Burbank, California to do a series of on location interviews at NBC Universal's HQ in Universal City, California. The interview consisted of 5 different 30 minute interviews (don't worry, I had a break in between).

After learning of my acceptance into the program a few weeks later, I was paired up with an IMLP "buddy" who is already on program.

On top of this, we have one full week for "orientation" at 30 Rock in the Big Apple, followed by the Junior bootcamp, whereall GE and NBC Universal IMLP's train for a month in Connecticut.

Despite being more then a month away from starting, I am preparing for my move out to California (I'm from New York) for my first two rotations. Packing, finding living arrangements, and getting my things out there, has really been keeping me busy.

'30 Rock' Hits Close to Home

Liz complains about cutbacksWe love '30 Rock' here at GE. Even when - scratch that, especially when - they're poking fun of their parent company... and no, I'm not talking about the Scheinhardt Wig Company (which is sadly fictional). NBC Universal is actually one of the four business verticals of the GE corporation.

What started as a behind-the-scenes satire of another NBC sketch show has grown and evolved over the past three seasons into a much more complex comedy show. Sometimes we feel like their jokes are written just for us, since some of the jabs at GE probably aren't appreciated by non-employees in quite the same way.

Case in point: episode 309 ("Retreat to Move Forward"), where Jack and Liz attend a GE business retreat full of Six Sigma jokes and GE jargon.

More recently, episode 317 ("Cutbacks") struck me as especially relevant. Like most businesses today, GE is cutting costs in light of the current economic climate. It's definitely a tough time in GE history, but at least '30 Rock' still allows us to laugh at ourselves a bit.
