GExtreme Makeover – MPS Edition

I, along with two other IMLPs, had the distinct pleasure of working on the GExtreme Makeover of a Milwaukee Public School classroom earlier last month.

As a part of the GE Healthcare iCare initiative, GEHC IT and Process Excellence recently partnered with CompuCom to donate 45 computers to the Samuel Morse – John Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented, a Milwaukee Public School. On Wednesday, January 26th, students, employees and local media attended an unveiling event to see the new media lab for the first time since the project began in November 2010.

GE Healthcare IT Program Manager and IMLP alumnus Romel Tolbert said, “Before the donation, I visited the class and a number of students seemed to be huddled around a few machines.  Immediately, I knew there was a need to do something more.”

Try to run a hectic ER with our ‘Patient Shuffle’ game

Do the Patient ShuffleGE’s recent healthymagination thought leadership summit on hospital efficiency took an in-depth look at how medicine is being transformed by measurable new ways to standardize care, reduce errors, and manage critical hospital equipment — and staff — more efficiently. Those changes underway — and the hurdles that doctors and hospital administrators still face in implementing them — are the subject of a new five-part interactive feature, “Healthy Hospitals,” on GE.com. It ranges from videos of hospital staffers who have to juggle operating rooms and equipment use in high-stress environments to the video game, pictured below, that let’s you see just how good (or bad) you might be at trying to alleviate the more than four hours that patients end up waiting on average in an emergency room visit.

Hands on Atlanta 2008: IM Leaders, IMLPs Unite

Volunteering at Hands on Atlanta Day20,000.

No, not 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but 20,000 hours of volunteering for Hands on Atlanta day over the past eight years.

When I arrived at Green Acres Elementary School bright and early on Saturday morning, I couldn't find a place to park. The place was packed. I had to block someone in! Being my first "hands on atlanta" volunteer event, I did not know what to expect.

25% of the total participants were IMpact employees, 50% of task leaders being from the IM team as well (not bad!)

Projects included rebuilding a large outdoor classroom/deck, building a reading loft in the media center and performance stage in the speech room, designing & installing numerous storage bins and shelving units, painting dozens of murals throughout the school, and major landscaping. Not to mention the water diversion drains that were dug out and rocked or the picnic tables and benches that were built and installed around the school.

Seeing that I hadn't yet been to the gym that day, I decided to take the "outdoorsy" route and shovel mulch. My arms were pretty sore the next day. However, while at the event, I was able to meet other members of leadership development programs.
