Start with the Best

The 2011 recruiting season is starting to heat up and it’s time to ask, ‘what am I looking for in a job or internship?’ There is a large array of factors to be considered, each with differing importance depending on your individual priorities. GE and the Information Management Leadership Program (IMLP) is the best choice if you put high priority on opportunities to develop into a leader and want long term career growth. Need more than a statement from an IMLP? The Hay Group just put out the 6th annual ranking of the ‘Best Companies for Leadership’ and GE is ranked #1 for the fourth time in the six year history of the ranking (The other two years GE was in the Top 5). Below is an IMLP perspective of why GE really is #1 in leadership according to the criteria and methods the Hay group used.

Global: The ‘elite’ companies that made the top of the list were described as being “a global neural network... These are the firms that are ready to compete in a complex, global, multicultural marketplace”.  As an IMLP you will have multiple opportunities working with groups around the globe and to experience being part of the ‘global neural network’. For example, on your first day at junior bootcamp you are introduced and have the opportunity to work with a diverse international group of motivated and inspirational people.

GE Tops in Leadership

For the fourth time in the last five years, General Electric has been named number one in a list of best Companies for Leadership, according to a survey conducted by the Hay Group, a global management consulting firm.

The study ranks the best companies for leadership around the globe and examines how those companies develop current and future leaders. This year, GE topped the list for the second straight year. It was followed by Procter & Gamble, Intel Corporation, Siemens and Banco Santander.

According to Hay Group's study, all of the Top 20 companies report that everyone at every level of the organization has the opportunity to develop and practice the capabilities needed to lead others, compared to less than 70 percent of all other companies in the study. In addition, 90 percent of the Top 20 companies report that people are expected to lead regardless of whether they have a formal position of authority, compared to only 59 percent of other companies.

"The Top 20 Best Companies for Leadership are at the forefront of a significant shift away from hierarchical organizational operating models," said Rick Lash, Director in Hay Group's Leadership and Talent Practice and co-leader of the Best Companies for Leadership Study. "Leadership in the twenty-first century is about leading at all levels; not restricting it to title. As organizations become flatter, the best leaders are learning they must check their egos at the door and become increasingly sensitive to diversity, generational and geographical issues."

The Hay Group lauded GE for again making the commitment to developing leaders, saying GE maintains its "top-notch reputation for leadership excellence."

GE To Choose 40 Students for SU's Leadership at Work Series

Image via Syr.edu/Syracuse UniversityAn original partnership between GE and the Center for Career Services at Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York, USA) has created an innovative leadership development series entitled "Leadership at Work."

This four session series (2/4 (evening), 2/5 (evening), 2/19 (evening), 2/20 (day) will include leadership development sessions on Facilitation Skills, Social Styles, Teams, Team Building, and Presentation Skills and will be taught by GE leaders.

Each evening session (2/4, 2/5 & 2/19), will run from 5:30-9:00pm. The Saturday session (2/20) will run from 8:30am~3:00pm. All sessions will provide meals and dress is business casual. The series will culminate with a certificate of completion and a graduation.

There is a difference between doing things right and doing the right things.

Students at Syracuse University often get involved with leadership opportunities in order to do the right things. They become excellent student leaders who embrace the idea of change leadership and make enormous contributions to the Syracuse University campus.

The void is determining how to translate that experience into succeeding in an increasingly complex and diverse world of work. This year General Electric (GE) plans to help 40 selected students translate their experience into action.

Syracuse University students can apply on OrangeLink until 1/30/2010.

@SU - EEDPs and Smart Grids

New EEDP Friend Owen at the GRCLast week, I traveled to Syracuse University with a FMP (Financial Managment Program), an EEDP (Edison Engineering Development Program) and my former AL (Assignment Leader).

While driving to Syracuse with my new leadership program friends, Owen, the EEDP, pulled out his iPhone and showed us a video on Smart Grids - but what we didn't realize is that he was IN the video (which was pretty cool).

Owen appeared in the video because he works at the GE Global Research Center, and has been working on Smart Grid technology there.

Check out the in-depth article posted at Technology Review by MIT.

As an IMLP, you're able to get to know members of other leadership programs - and it's pretty cool to see what they're working on too!
