... Another Syracuse Recruiting Story

Angry OttoAhh yesss... The oh so familiar yet distant past of the angry otto mascot. I remember joining the ranks of the first freshmen that would henceforth be known as fruit instead of men. I applied to be an Orangeman not an Orange.

Syracuse left me with some great memories... among some of the best were going to London for semester abroad, volunteering with Syracuse University Ambulance (and seeing the best of campus ;-] ), and of course watching the legendary SU - UCONN Big East Game from Myrtle Beach during spring break.

Despite the great memories, Senior year Class of 09' did not represent the best of economic times for our country. Knowing that my major at the iSchool was one of the few with a lot of jobs still available, I still remember being very nervous about approaching this edgy job market.

I had heard about the IMLP program from a couple of friends, Alana and Mike, as well as the recruiters who also pitched the program to our classes at the iSchool. The idea of moving around every six months was something I wasn't too sure about, and the application process seemed kind of complicated.

However, When I went to the career fair that year, I met some IMLPs who really sold me on the program, and I could tell it was a good fit for me. Not to mention they were giving out free yo-yos! They mentioned the facebook page (if your not already... become a fan) which I visited to ask my questions about the application process and they answered pretty quickly. I also was able to attend several GE/Syracuse events with  my senior year including visiting and touring their Schenectady plant, meetups on marshall street, and others.

After submitting my resume I had to go through the interview process, which very different from anything I had experienced before. First, I was interviewed on campus and after that a phone interview. The third round took place at the headquarters for GE Capital (the business I was selected for). The night before they took us all out for an informational dinner with the program leader and current IMLPs. The next day I had 3 interviews and had to give a short presentation about a topic of my choice (Cloud Computing) and be prepared to answer any questions thrown at me.

Luckily, the selection process was a success for me and now I have completed my training and am in my first rotation with GE Capital working as a Project Leader for Energy Financial Services. I feel things are working around in a circle now as I will be back at the Carrier Dome in a week on the other side of the table, telling people about GE.
