Rotation Spotlight: Will Kievit
November 4, 2009
Note: It's hard to follow in the footsteps of an NBC IMLP, with 30 rock and all...
In truth, I didn’t even apply for NBC’s program and I am really happy working for GE Capital because I am learning about finance and capital systems, which ultimately make the world go ‘round.
GE Capital funds all sorts of things from Kinney Drug Stores and Jack in the Box fast food to billion dollar energy deals like their Linden electrical plant in New Jersey.
My current rotation is working with GE Capital’s Energy Financial Services (EFS). Obviously when a company is shelling out millions and billions of dollars, there is a lot of risk associated with its deals, so there is a LOT of reporting , regulations, and analysis that goes along with it.
My first project is automating a report known as Policy 6.0 which is a 75 page report that is created quarterly, by hand. Learning the meanings behind all of the charts and graphs is part of the job and really helps when trying to design them with developers. In the end the goal is to bring the process time of building the report from 2 weeks to 2 days, including validation.
I recently started working on a second project for software transition. There are multiple generations of this product to choose for upgrade with more in the pipeline to be released next year.
My role on this project is to help decide what generation of the project to switch to, develop a transition plan, testing plans (to make sure all our files will still work), training documentation, holding training sessions, and ultimately assist in managing the upgrade should it happen before the end of my rotation.
These applications are used more than any other in this company; therefore it is not as easy as just upgrading a home computer.
In addition to my main projects, I am responsible for managing user enhancements, etc. for existing portfolio systems. I interact with senior level management on a weekly basis, including monthly reports with the CFO. I am excited to see how everything will play out and what my next rotation will have in store.

That's so exciting to hear that you are participating in such major project developments. I can really relate to your in automation and testing. Last summer I interned with another company, where I was automating test scripts and testing web applications. It's great to see that you were given real, hand-on projects during your rotation. How long have you been working on the Policy 6.0 automation project? How has this experience related to your college coursework?
Now, I'm really excited about this upcoming semester. Thank you for sharing your experience.
